What is OSA?

OSA is more commonly known as sleep apnoea. Apnoeas or hypopneas are when individuals experience upper airway collapses (apnoeas) or partial blockages (hypopneas) during sleep.

A collapse will block the airway and cause a pause in your breathing. As a result of this, your oxygen levels in the blood drop considerably. This triggers the brain to deliver a waking response and open the airways which are known as arousals.

Sleep apnoea may cause hundreds of arousals a night. The combination of oxygen deficiency and arousals disrupts sleep and impairs the function of organs and hormones.

There are different treatment methods and your doctor will prescribe the therapy that best suits your circumstances.
